Phoneme Play
Electronics
The sole audio source material for Phoneme Play is a single spoken sentence of five words. Over the course of the piece, each word of the sentence, from the outside in, is isolated for development. During these developments, each word’s component phonemes are systematically altered, using simple transformations of pitch and duration. The resulting skittery, rhythmic texture blurs the line between referential words and pure sound, especially near the work’s driving end, as various double-meanings are suggested as full words emerge, bobbing in and out of their original syntax.
